Final Summary:

I learned a ton in this class. There were some occasions where I struggle but I’m sad that this is the end. I had a lot of fun and I loved the creative aspects of it.

Weekly Summary – Part two for Week 4

I knew virtually nothing about video editing when I started my assignments for this week. I used Windows Movie Maker because it seemed more user-friendly than other video-editing programs. It really wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. It can be somewhat frustrating though, when you are trying to manipulate the program to do exactly what you want it to do. I had a few problems with adding audio at first. I would try to add more than one song and it kept giving me an error message saying that there was already a song there. I then realized that you had to move the line tool to where you wanted the new song to start playing. So, it was a simple fix.

I started the week off by doing Daily Create 520, Photography. This Daily Create was to Make an out of focus photo that is artistic/interesting/evocative.
eyeofthebeholderdefocus.jpg

I used a photo-editing software to change the colors and put the picture out of focus. I also added a scratchy looking filter, as well as a black rounded frame. I think the picture looks more mysterious this way, and really draws you in to what is happening in the scene. The eyes of the woman look like they are staring right through you. This picture is a screenshot that I took from the episode “Eye of the Beholder” from the Twilight Zone. I think I like it better now after the alterations I made.

http://amcandre.com/daily-creates/daily-create-520-photography/

I read Roger Ebert’s article and…

Then I began work on the scene review assignment. I chose the scene from the episode “Night Call” to review. This is my first review camera work analysis of the scene:

It is the first scene of the episode.  When the scene starts the camera pans from the left side of the room to the right past a rocking chair and then focuses on the woman in the bed. The camera angle is above the woman therefore focusing the scene around her. You can tell it is storming outside because of the flashes of light. They did a good job of portraying what was going on in the scene even though there was no sound. You knew what was going on in the scene because the camera portrayed the sequence of events. The way that the camera focused on the telephone and then back to the woman, where she expresses disdain, you can tell that the phone was ringing.  The camera only seemed to switch views 2 or 3 times, from the woman to the telephone. When the camera switched to the telephone it was directly facing the telephone, at a front facing angle. The quick cut to the telephone and then back to the woman indicates that there is some action taking place. At the end of this scene, the camera pans back from right to left, clearly ending the scene.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/review-1-analyze-the-camera-work/

So for the second part of the assignment, we were to analyze the audio track. I noticed the distinct pauses between the lightning crashes and the phone ringing, as well as the woman waiting for an answer on the other end of the line before asking “Who is this?” again. Here is the rest of my analysis:

Lightning crashes, indicating a bad thunderstorm. The phone rings twice. Someone picks up the phone and says hello. Thunder crashes in the background. There is no one on the line. Static. Woman hangs up. Thunder crashes again. Immediately, the phone rings again. You can hear her pick up. She says hello? hello? No one there. She hangs up. Background music begins. It sounds ominous.

The sound of thunder introduces the scene as the first audio you hear. It  sets the  theme for the entire scene. The timing of the thunder and the phone seems to be related. The actress waits for the person on the line to respond before she repeats hello?. There are definite pauses in the scene, maybe to add more dramatic effect and mystery to the scene. The woman seems nervous in the tone of her voice as well as the pauses she makes when she’s waiting for someone to answer her. You can also faintly hear static from the phone. This adds to the mysterious vibe of the scene.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/review-2-analyze-the-audio-track/

and this is my 3rd review of the scene… Putting it all together…:

It seems like anytime that the actress was talking, that the thunder was quiet. Once the thunder started again, the phone immediately rang. When the woman seemed more worried, it seemed like the camera zoomed closer or more intimately on her face and facial reactions. I’m assuming by getting a closer shot of the actress that this was to provoke more sympathy out of the viewer.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/review-3-put-it-all-together/

and here is my Final Review of Night Call:

Review 1:I chose a scene from the episode “Night Call” to review. It is the first scene of the episode. When the scene starts the camera pans from the left side of the room to the right past a rocking chair and then focuses on the woman in the bed. The camera angle is above the woman therefore focusing the scene around her. You can tell it is storming outside because of the flashes of light. The quick cut to the telephone and then back to the woman indicates that there is some action taking place. At the end of this scene, the camera pans back from right to left, clearly ending the scene.

Review 2: Lightning crashes, indicating a bad thunderstorm. The phone rings twice. Someone picks up the phone and says hello. Thunder crashes in the background. There is no one on the line. Static. Woman hangs up. Thunder crashes again. Immediately, the phone rings again. You can hear her pick up. She says hello? hello? No one there. She hangs up. Background music begins. It sounds ominous.

Review 3: It seems like anytime that the actress was talking, that the thunder was quiet. Once the thunder started again, the phone immediately rang. When the woman seemed more worried, it seemed like the camera zoomed closer or more intimately on her face and facial reactions. I’m assuming by getting a closer shot of the actress that this was to provoke more sympathy out of the viewer.

Final Conclusion:
In the opening of the scene, the camera panned to the right. From Roger Ebert’s article “How to read a movie”, we know that “right is more positive”. He also mentions that “the future seems to live on the right, the past on the left.” The idea of this is that the action (what is taking place in the scene) is going to happen towards the right. Ebert also mentions that “symmetrical compositions seem at rest”. The position of the camera on the first few shots of the woman seem very symmetrical creating balance and focus on the subject. The first few shots of the woman are also above her making her seem vulnerable. Ebert refers to this as making “characters into pawns”.

Below is the embedded scene from Night Call that I used:

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/final-review-of-night-call/

Our next assignment was to research some of the production notes on the episode we chose to review. I found most of my information from the website IMDb.com. We were also supposed to find another scene from a different tv/movie but the same genre to add to our original scene. Below is my research and the embedded video.

I researched some of the production notes on the episode Night Call of the Twilight Zone on the website IMDb.com. It was supposed to air on November 22, 1963, but was postponed because of the assassination of JFK. Instead, the episode aired on February 7th, 1964. The episode’s script was adapted from the short story “Long Distance Call” by Richard Matheson. The director was Jacques Tourneur for this episode. The stars of this episode were Gladys Cooper, Nora Marlowe, Martine Bartlett, and of course Rod Serling. The genre of the Twilight Zone show would be sci-fi. I choose a scene from another sci-fi genre, the movie, “Invasion of the Body-Snatchers.”

In the scene from the body snatchers, you really need the audio to know what is going on because they aren’t really doing anything except talking in this scene. They do a lot of cut scenes going back and forth to each character that is talking. The camera focuses dead center on the speaker. The speaker is in the center of the screen giving symmetry to the shot. The speakers for the most part are at eye-level. There is some sad music playing in the background conveying a sad atmosphere.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/sci-fi-genres-night-call-and-invasion-of-the-body-snatchers/

I then went on to blog about whether my scene choice was meaningful or playful? This is what I said:

I chose a scene from the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers to add to the scene from the Night Call episode. Both of these clips are in the sci-fi genre. They are also from about the same time period. They are also both black-and-white. I would say that these videos are just playful examples of the genre of sci-fi. Twilight Zone definitely is known for having meaningful messages though. I think YouTube is probably the most current up- to -date information bank that we have. It is so well-known across the world and the videos on there are so diverse, that I would consider YouTube to really just be video as we know it on the web.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/meaningful-or-playful/

These were my Video Assignment ideas before I began doing the video assignments:

I was thinking about doing the video assignment “Advertisement Galore”.

For this assignment, take different clips of people in movies using something and make an advertisement out of it! Be as creative as possible!

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/advertisement-galore/

It seems like it would be a fun assignment to do, incorporating video with text. It appeals to me because I can make it as goofy as I’d like, while adding creativity into it. I believe that I could probably use Windows Movie Maker to do this assignment. I would probably download some clips from YouTube that have to do with the same object and then cut them and then add them together. I then would add text, and maybe some special effects.

For another assignment I might do “Product Evolution”.

Things are’t what they use to be. For this assignment pick a product, a piece of technology works best but you can use anything, and create a short video timeline of how it looked way back all the way to how it looks today. Be sure to add dates.

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/product-evolution/

This one seems really interesting. I was thinking of maybe doing cars or cell phones or televisions. I will have to think more on this one because I want to do something really unique that people don’t normally think about. I could probably use Windows Movie Maker for this one as well. I will find pictures of the older piece of technology first and then montage them together or possibly overlap them to look like its morphing in front of your eyes.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/video-assignment-ideas/

I did Daily Create 522 which was: Capturing a photo in the golden hour – first hour past sunrise or last before sunset.

clouds

http://amcandre.com/daily-creates/daily-create-522/

This is my summary for the two daily creates we were required to do before Thursday:

The first daily create I did this week was “Make an out of focus photo that is artistic/interesting/evocative”.(tdc520)

I chose a screenshot from the Twilight Zone episode, “Eye of the Beholder”, when the patient is being held down while the doctor is coming at her with a syringe. This shot already has a lot of emotion in the scene, but I decided to emphasize the drama by messing with the colors and putting it out of focus. I think it came out pretty well. I believe that it does relate to what we have been doing this week about “reading” movies. We are drawn to the brighter areas of the photograph, which causes “dominant contrast”. Also, the point of view below the characters’ eyelines enhances them and makes the scene more interesting. You don’t notice it at first glance but the longer you look at the photo, your eyes can see the syringe in the lower left hand corner.

eyeofthebeholderdefocus.jpg

For the other daily create I did so far, I completed:
Capture a photo in the golden hour- first hour past sunrise or last before sunset

http://tdc.ds106.us/tdc522/#comment-7189

clouds

I don’t believe that this photograph has any relation to what we are doing this week except the angle looking above kind of makes the clouds look like gods. I really like doing the photography assignments though, they are my favorite.

http://amcandre.com/uncategorized/summary-of-two-daily-creates/

The next Daily Create I did was Daily Create 524: Draw a picture of your favorite cartoon character having a ds106 experience. I’ve always really liked spongebob and I think this was a great way to incorporate him having a meltdown moment.

spongebob

http://amcandre.com/daily-creates/daily-create-524/

For my first Video Assignments I chose Digital Story Compilation which was worth two stars. For this assignment you were supposed to create a video compilation of some of your favorite things you’ve made is ds106.

This was my post:

I used Windows Movie Maker to make this video. This is a video of my favorite assignments I did so far for ds106.

http://amcandre.com/video-assignments/video-assignments-digital-story-compilation-2-stars/

For my next video assignment, I chose Serenity Now! which is worth 3 stars. This project was to create a video that portrayed serenity, something that you would hear in a spa or a doctors office. I actually liked this video compilation so much that I listen to it all the time now! haha

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/serenity-now/

I am very proud of my Serenity Now! video. I used time lapse videos I found and linked them together in Windows Movie maker. I then added music: Only Time by Enya, Serenade by Franz Schubert, and Por ti volare by Andrea Bocelli. The first video is of a rose blooming, the second is of different scenes in nature, and the third is satellite video of the earth. I also added a mini-clip in there that is really fun, but you will have to watch the video to see what it is!

http://amcandre.com/video-assignments/video-assignments-serenity-now/

For my last daily create I did Daily Create 525. For this assignment you were supposed to take a photo of a personal object in an unusual location.

http://tdc.ds106.us/tdc525/

This is a picture of my favorite pin. It’s a troll with orange hair. I have had him for many years, therefore he means a lot to me. I have put him in my freezer.

20130616_214247

http://amcandre.com/daily-creates/daily-create-525/

ok..so on to the next video assignments…I also did the Character/genre song mashup which is worth 3 stars. You were supposed to find a theme from TV and or movies and edit a video sequence with a song track from a popular song that matches it. I choose the theme of Love…:

I chose the theme Love for my genre song Mashup. I thought this would be a cute montage. I found clips of people kissing and that seemed really “in love” (haha) and imported them into windows movie maker. I cut and trimmed them and linked the different scenes together. I used the song “First day of my life”, by Bright Eyes. I think that the music really meshes well with the video clips I used.

http://amcandre.com/video-assignments/video-assignments-charactergenre-song-mashup-3-stars/

Next video assignment, Product Evolution worth 2 stars. You were supposed to pick a product and create a video timeline of how it looked from it’s beginnings to how it looks today.

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/product-evolution/

I decided to pick telephones as my product. The reason I chose telephones is because everyone is familiar with what they look like today, but many may not know what they looked like as they were transitioning. There are some pretty goofy looking phones from back in the day that you can see here in my video. I used Windows Movie Maker for this one. I found my pictures on the internet and made a slideshow timeline of them. I added the song “Changes”, by David Bowie.

http://amcandre.com/video-assignments/video-assignments-product-evolution-2-stars/

I then did the video assignment A Word…A picture..a story worth 3 stars…this was a weird one.

Chose up to 5-10 words..just randomly pick them don’t over think it just chose these words out of the blue. Then do a Google image search on these images and chose one of the first visible photos for the word..after you have chosen your words and your images put them together in video form and tell a story..include a sentence with each image to help guide your story or try and tell it without the sentences.

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/a-word-a-picture-a-story/

this, love, pick, tape, tell, then, bear

This is what love is. Pick your favorite music tape. Tell your friends. Then try not to get eaten by a bear.

My story is very weird and random, but I guess that’s what we were going for here.

For my last assignment I did YOLO is the MOTTO! worth 2.5 stars. This one was really fun!

For a lot of people, Y.O.L.O (You Only Live Once) is a term used prior to, after, or while doing something morally unacceptable or idiotic. For this video assignment, just like charades, try to explain what this word means to you through storytelling, by using pictures or videos and not just explaining it through words. Even if you hate the word or if it means something completely different than what is explained above, try to incorporate it in your video. Challenge, >> your video should be less than 5min (5 min max) << ENJOY!!

I’m not the kind of person who really uses the term Y.O.L.O. frequently, and I fear that a lot of people use it too casually. My video shows what Y.O.L.O. should really mean. It doesn’t mean partying every night to me, I believe that it should mean pushing the envelope and really being a dangerous daredevil. I used Windows Movie Maker for this compilation. I broke up the two videos I used with some entertaining pictures of what Y.O.L.O. could mean.

Total stars: 15.5

Total Daily Creates: 4

Summary of two Daily Creates

For the other daily create I did so far, I completed:
Capture a photo in the golden hour- first hour past sunrise or last before sunset

clouds

I don’t believe that this photograph has any relation to what we are doing this week except the angle looking above kind of makes the clouds look like gods. I really like doing the photography assignments though, they are my favorite.

Week 3 Summary

At the beginning of Week 3 my radio show group began sharing our emails and ideas for our radio show. By Wednesday, we had divided all parts and on Wednesday, a couple of us met at Mary Washington and recorded our show. Our show was going to be a retelling of the Twilight Zone episode, “Eye of the Beholder”. I played the voice of the doctor as well as Rod Serling’s voice. We changed the script by making the doctor a woman ( trying to modernize) so therefore we did not change my voice. However, for Rod Serling’s voice we changed the pitch of my voice to sound lower and creepier. We also wanted to be able to clearly distinguish the two voices, so listeners wouldn’t be confused. To modernize it more, we changed the words of the script. I also did a commercial for the radio show. My commercial was a travel commercial for the city of “Homewood”, which is referencing the same “Homewood” from the Twilight Zone episode, “Walking Distance”. The commercial mentions some things you would find in the Homewood from the Twilight Zone episode, such as riding the merry-go-round and going to the malt shop.

DS106 RADIO SHOW

This is our completed Radio Show :

I used the same commercial I had made for the Radio show for the Audio Assignment, “Radio Commercial” which was worth 3 stars.

AUDIO ASSIGNMENTS: DS106 RADIO COMMERCIAL- 3 STARS

For another assignment I did the Teezee Reference Audio Assignment which was worth 2 stars. I liked this assignment. You had to find a reference made about the Twilight Zone in a movie or a TV show that is completely independent from the Twilight Zone. I chose an audio snippet from the cartoon TV series Family Guy. This was a perfect example of a reference made to the Twilight Zone episode, “Time Enough At Last”, and it’s really funny. I found a clip of the episode on YouTube.com, then I used www.youtube-mp3.org to convert it to just an audio file. I then uploaded the file onto Soundcloud and then embedded it on my blog.

AUDIO ASSIGNMENTS: TEEZEE REFERENCE- 2 STARS

I didn’t get to finish all my daily creates this week. I had a pretty busy week but I did do two out of the four required. One was to write a love poem from one character in the Twilight Zone to another. I thought that the Doctor and Janet would make a good match because in a weird way I think he was trying to help her.

DAILY CREATE: 518
Love poem from the doctor to Janet in “Eye of the Beholder.”

Even though your face is whack,
I’ll always have your back.
Your beauty is on the inside,
About that, I have never lied.
I tried to fix your face many times,
but that’s not why I call you mine.
You are mine because you are sweet,
that is why our love is so neat.

For the other Daily Create, we were supposed to take a photograph of what we would do if we were Henry Bemis, a man with all the time in the world to do what he loved. I took a photograph of painting supplies, colored pencils, and loads of snacks. If I had all the time in the world I would try to make a lot of beautiful art, because arts and crafts make me happy and less lonely. I would also eat so that I could survive.

DAILY CREATE: 516

IF I WAS HENRY BEMIS, AND I HAD ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, I WOULD EAT AND DO ARTS AND CRAFTS.

For the rest of my required stars I did AUDIO ASSIGNMENTS- MUSIC TAG – 3 STARS and

AUDIO ASSIGNMENTS- AUDIO DREAM STORIES- 2 STARS.

For music tag I used five songs,

Haddaway – What is love
Nazareth – Love Hurts
Three Days Grace – Pain
KC and the Sunshine Band – Get Down Tonight
The Beatles – All You Need is Love

I used Audacity to trim and line up the songs. I think this flows pretty well.

For Audio Dream Stories I also used audacity to trim the clips I found on Freesound.org. I used the sound clips and sound effects:

ohrpilot__static-noise-several-different-ones.aiff
rutgermuller__radio-noise.wav
loopbasedmusic__rain-medium-thunders.aiff

These were all from the Freesound website. For this Assignment, I decided to go with a dream someone might have if they left the radio or television on while they went to sleep. Don’t worry, you can’t hear any words, just static. Also, you can hear rain in the background. The audio dream could be interpreted as someone dreaming that they are in Zombie Apocalypse faintly hearing the reports of a zombie outbreak.

Comments I made:

Rochelle Lockridge – Self- Reflection – You have a really nice voice, you should be on the radio. I like the music you integrated into this, it flows really nicely. I like your story, really draws people in.

krisavball08 – Ds106 Advice – Very informative. “Something you think may take 10 minutes can take 5 hours…” very important.

@hellobrittanyy – Brittany Dray- Are you there world, It’s me Taylor. – This is really awesome, and there is so much detail. Your gifs are really cool and I love the postcard designs you made. I also thought that the map pictures were a nice touch. Super detailed. Great job!

@RitaLogorrhea – This is so cool. Did you do this in photoshop? I like the crackle effect.

@BenRimes – Great idea for a hospitality suite for talky tina! That rooms probably bigger than her house! Nice editing of the picture, she really does look like she’s behind bars!

I did a lot of the audio assignments this week. Some were more challenging than others, but I think I did well with most of them. I definitely enjoy the Design Assignments more, I think I can get more creative with them. The Animated Gif ones aren’t bad either. I commented on Sean and a few others pictures and blogged assignments in the past week. I plan on doing more of that, hopefully it will be easier for me to find people because of the canvas site. Thanks for everyone’s comments and encouragement this week. Back to work tomorrow! Good Luck!
